Boiler Losing Pressure? Causes, Fixes and When to Call an Engineer

A boiler losing pressure is one of the most common issues homeowners run into, and in most cases it is straightforward to understand and fix. That said, if it keeps happening it usually points to an underlying problem that is worth getting checked properly. Here is what causes it, how to top your boiler back up safely, and when it is time to call in a Gas Safe registered engineer.

What Boiler Pressure Should Be

Most modern combi and system boilers run on a sealed system, meaning the water inside is pressurised rather than relying on a header tank in the loft. When your boiler is switched off and the system is cold, the pressure gauge should typically read between 1 and 1.5 bar. While the boiler is heating, this will rise slightly as the water expands, often by around three quarters of a bar, before settling back down once it cools.

If the gauge drops below around 1 bar, your boiler has lost pressure and will need topping up. Many boilers will display a fault or error code and refuse to fire up at all once pressure falls too low, since this is a built in safety measure.

Common Causes of Boiler Pressure Loss

A small drop in pressure now and then is completely normal, but if your boiler keeps losing pressure it is usually down to one of the following:

  • A leak somewhere in the system. This is the most common cause by far. Leaks are most often found at radiator valves, pipe joints or connection points rather than within the pipework itself, and can sometimes be slow enough to evaporate before any puddle forms.
  • A faulty expansion vessel. The expansion vessel manages the natural rise and fall of pressure as water heats up. If it loses its charge over time, pressure can drop and may not hold even after topping up.
  • Bleeding a radiator. Releasing air from a radiator also releases a small amount of water, which will cause a slight drop in system pressure that usually just needs a quick top up.
  • A filling loop left open. If the filling loop is not fully closed after topping up, it can allow pressure to fluctuate continuously.
  • A worn pressure relief valve. If you notice water dripping from a small copper pipe on an outside wall near your boiler, this is the pressure relief valve discharging, often a sign that pressure has built up too high and is being released.
  • General wear over time. Pipework and radiator connections can loosen or corrode gradually, particularly in older systems, allowing small amounts of water to be lost steadily.

How to Top Up Your Boiler Pressure Yourself

If your boiler has simply dropped a little and there is no sign of a leak, topping it up yourself is usually straightforward using the filling loop. This is typically a silver braided hose connected to two valves underneath the boiler.

  1. Turn the boiler off and allow it to cool fully
  2. Check both ends of the filling loop are securely attached
  3. Slowly open both valves to let cold mains water into the system
  4. Watch the pressure gauge and close the valves once it reaches around 1 to 1.5 bar
  5. Make sure both valves are fully closed before switching the boiler back on

Always check your boiler’s manual first, as the exact process can vary slightly between models. If you are in any doubt, it is best to have a Gas Safe registered engineer show you how to do this safely for your specific system.

Important: if you suspect there is a leak anywhere in the system, do not keep topping up the pressure. This will only push more water through the leak and can make the problem and any resulting damage worse.

When to Call a Gas Safe Engineer

A one off drop in pressure that tops up and holds is generally nothing to worry about. It is time to call in a professional if:

  • The pressure drops again within a day or two of topping up
  • You notice damp patches, water stains or pooling near the boiler, radiators or pipework
  • The boiler is losing pressure quickly rather than gradually
  • You have topped up the system more than once and the problem keeps returning
  • The boiler displays a fault code and will not reset after topping up

An engineer will be able to check for hidden leaks, test the expansion vessel and pressure relief valve, and identify whether the issue is something straightforward or a sign that the system needs wider attention. Persistent pressure loss left unaddressed can lead to more significant and costly repairs further down the line.
